The bells of St Nicholas Hamzawi in Cairo
The bells of this historic church of the Patriarchate of Alexandria had been silent for years because of technical problems. We installed a modern bell-ringing controller, and since 4 August 2019 they have been ringing again.
The project
A historic church of the Patriarchate of Alexandria
The Holy Church of St Nicholas in Hamzawi stands in the heart of old Cairo, near Khan el-Khalili, and houses the offices of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in the city. It was in this church that St Nektarios was ordained bishop, in 1889.
The church’s bells had fallen silent for many years because of technical problems. Tsitouras Bros Co. installed a modern bell-ringing controller, with the blessing of Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria, and since Sunday 4 August 2019 the bells have been ringing again.
The project was reported by the Greek Community of Cairo: “The bells rang out again at St Nicholas Hamzawi” (ekkairo.org, 12 August 2019, in Greek).
In Cairo
An upgrade at St George’s
At the Holy Church of St George in Cairo we upgraded the bells that were already there: we fitted electromagnetic strikers and a bell-ringing controller, so that the bells ring automatically, without changing anything on the bells themselves.
For churches abroad, we work with the parish or the community from the initial study through to installation.
