User guide: Smart Bells GM-870I

It is a metal box about 33 × 18 cm with a 7-inch colour screen. The screen shows a large clock, the date and the «ΣΥΜΒΑΝΤΑ» (events) line, and «mod. 870» is written on it. On the left it has 5 round buttons I–V and on the right 5 buttons with symbols (hourglass, clock with a small hammer, bell with a wheel, hand with a hammer, pointing hand). It also has arrow buttons with OK and NO, 10 number buttons 1–0 below the screen, the «Smart Bells» logo and a USB port.

Ask the digital assistant

Play a melody now (manually)

  1. Make sure you can see the home screen with the large clock. If you cannot see it, press NO a few times.
  2. Press the button with the pointing hand. It is the last one (the lowest) of the 5 buttons to the right of the screen.
  3. You will see the «ΕΚΤΕΛΕΣΗ ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑΣ» (melody playback) screen with the «ΕΚΤΕΛΕΣΗ ΑΡ.:» (play no.) field.
  4. With the number buttons below the screen, type the number of the melody. You will find it on the «ΜΝΗΜΕΣ» (memories) card we left you.
  5. Press OK. The melody starts and the screen shows its number and title.
  6. Do you want it to play more times? Press OK while it is playing. Each press adds one repeat, and the screen shows how many there are.
  7. To stop it, press NO twice.

If you do not remember the number, at step 4 press 0 and then OK to see the list of melodies. Melodies 1–5 also play directly from buttons I–V to the left of the screen. If you press NO only once, the melody is not cut off: it finishes normally and the extra repeats are cancelled.

One-touch melody: buttons I–V

  1. To the left of the screen there are 5 buttons: I, II, III, IV, V. They play the melodies numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (see the «ΜΝΗΜΕΣ» (memories) card).
  2. Press the button you want briefly, without holding it down, e.g. I.
  3. You will see the «ΚΛΗΣΗ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ» (programme call) screen with the number and title of the melody.
  4. Press OK to play it. If you pressed the button by mistake, press NO and you go back to the home screen.
  5. To stop it at any time, press NO twice.

If you press one of I–V but not OK, the screen stays open for about 5 minutes and then goes back to the home screen by itself.

⚠ Do not hold the button down. If you hold it for about 5 seconds, you change the automatic schedule of that button (see the guide “Switch the schedule of buttons I–V on / off”).

Stop a melody / the bells

  1. Press the NO button twice (to the right of the screen, next to OK).
  2. If it keeps going, press NO a few more times, until you see the home screen with the clock.
  3. If you just want the melody to end smoothly, without being cut off suddenly, press NO only once.
  4. From the remote control (if you have one): press the red STOP button.

The «ΜΝΗΜΕΣ» (memories) card next to the machine says it too: pressing NO twice stops everything. If «ΣΒΗΣΙΜΟ» (fade-out) has been set (speakers only), the sound fades out slowly instead of stopping at once. Some programmes also switch on other devices, e.g. lights. If you stop such a programme halfway, that device may stay on; in that case call the company.

Where do I find the list of melodies and their numbers?

  1. Look at the «GM-870 ΜΝΗΜΕΣ» (GM-870 memories) card we left you next to the machine. Each line has a number and the name of one of your church’s melodies, e.g. «ΕΣΠΕΡΙΝΟΣ» (Vespers), «ΔΟΞΟΛΟΓΙΑ» (Doxology), «ΧΑΡΜΟΣΥΝΟ» (festive peal) or «ΠΕΝΘΙΜΟ ΚΗΔΕΙΑΣ» (funeral toll).
  2. On the machine: from the home screen, press the button with the pointing hand (the very bottom one to the right of the screen).
  3. On the «ΕΚΤΕΛΕΣΗ ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑΣ» (melody playback) screen, press 0 and then OK. The list of melodies appears.
  4. Press NO to go back to the home screen.
  5. To see what will play today, press OK on the home screen. You will see a list with time, number and title.

On the card, the number you type is the one before the name. Numbers 1–5 are also buttons I–V. The number at the end of the line is the melody’s place in the machine’s large library. The machine has 1000 melodies and every church uses different ones, so check your own card. If you have lost it, the company has the list for your machine.

Change the time on the machine

  1. From the home screen (with the large clock), press button 1. The «ΑΜΜΕΣΗ ΠΡΟΣΒΑΣΗ» (direct access) menu opens.
  2. Press 1 for «ΡΟΛΟΙ» (clock) and 1 again for «ΡΥΘΜΙΣΗ ΩΡΑΣ» (time setting). That is 1, 1, 1 in total.
  3. You will see «ΡΥΘΜΙΣΗ ΩΡΑΣ» and the time as hours:minutes:seconds. The hours are in a white box.
  4. Type the correct time with the number buttons. Use the left/right arrows to move to the minutes and the seconds, and type those too.
  5. Press OK to save.
  6. If you made a mistake, press NO. You leave without anything changing.
  7. Press NO a few times to go back to the home screen, and check the time.

If the time is wrong by exactly one hour, first see the guide “The time on the machine is wrong” (summer time and time zone). If the machine is connected to the internet, it corrects the time by itself once a day. To switch the display between 24-hour and a.m./p.m., press 1, 1, 5 («24ΩΡΗ ΜΟΡΦΗ», 24-hour format): «ΝΑΙ» (yes) means 24-hour.

Change the date

  1. From the home screen, press 1, 1, 2.
  2. You will see «ΡΥΘΜΙΣΗ ΗΜΕΡΟΜΗΝΙΑΣ» (date setting) with «ΗΜΕΡ.» (date) as day/month/year. The day is in a white box.
  3. Type the correct day, then the month and then the year. Use the arrows to move from one to the next.
  4. Press OK to save.
  5. To leave without a change, press NO.

The date format (e.g. day/month/year) is changed from 1, 1, 6.

Summer time / winter time (automatic change)

  1. From the home screen, press 1, 1, 4.
  2. You will see «ΑΥΤΟΜΑΤΗ ΚΑΛΟΚΑΙΡΙΝΗ ΩΡΑ» (automatic summer time) with the line «ΕΝΕΡΓΟΠ. DST:» (DST on:) and below it «ΤΕΛΕΥΤ. ΚΥΡ ΜΑΡΤΙΟΣ» (last Sunday of March) and «ΤΕΛΕΥΤ. ΚΥΡ ΟΚΤΩΒΡΙΟΣ» (last Sunday of October).
  3. If it says «ΝΑΙ» (yes) next to «ΕΝΕΡΓΟΠ. DST:», everything is correct. Press NO and, when you see «ΑΝΑΒΑΘΜΙΣΗ ΟΧΙ» (update: no), press OK without changing anything.
  4. If it says «ΟΧΙ» (no), change it to «ΝΑΙ» with the left/right arrows.
  5. Press NO. You will see the «ΑΝΑΒΑΘΜΙΣΗ ΟΧΙ» box.
  6. With the right or left arrow, change it to «ΝΑΙ» and press OK to save.

The time changes by itself at 02:00 on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October. If there is no power at that time, the change is made within the next 22 hours. In the bottom line of the screen there is an icon like a sun, which shows whether the automatic change is on.

⚠ Do not change the months («ΜΑΡΤΙΟΣ» (March) / «ΟΚΤΩΒΡΙΟΣ» (October)). They are the correct ones for Greece.

Automatic time from GPS or the internet, and checking the time zone

  1. The machine sets the time by itself only if it has an (optional) GPS/DCF receiver or if it is connected to the internet.
  2. Look at the GPS icon in the bottom line of the screen. Lit: the time was set correctly after midnight. Flashing: it is receiving the signal correctly. Off: there is no GPS, or no setting has been made since midnight.
  3. To see the time zone, press 1, 1, 3. You will see «ΕΠΙΛΟΓΗ ΖΩΝΗΣ ΩΡΑΣ» (time zone selection) and the line «ΖΩΝΗ ΩΡΑΣ UTC» (time zone UTC).
  4. For Greece it must say UTC +02.
  5. If it shows a different value, do not change it yourself. Contact the company.
  6. Press NO to leave. If you see «ΑΝΑΒΑΘΜΙΣΗ ΟΧΙ» (update: no), press OK without changing it.

With an internet connection, the time is corrected once a day, as long as the time zone is correct. In summer the time moves forward one hour through the summer time setting (1, 1, 4), not through the time zone.

⚠ On the same screen there are settings for sunrise and sunset («ΕΦΗΜΕΡΗ» (ephemeris), latitude/longitude). Do not change them.

The time on the machine is wrong

  1. If the difference is exactly one hour, press 1, 1, 4 and check that «ΕΝΕΡΓΟΠ. DST:» (DST on:) says «ΝΑΙ» (yes) (see “Summer time / winter time”).
  2. Check the time zone with 1, 1, 3. It must say «UTC +02». If it says something else, call the company.
  3. Check the date on the home screen. If it is wrong, correct it with 1, 1, 2.
  4. Correct the time with 1, 1, 1 (see “Change the time on the machine”).
  5. If the screen shows the correct time and only the tower clock is wrong, set it with 1, 1, 7.
  6. If the time goes wrong again after every power cut, contact the company.

When there is no power, the time is kept by an internal lithium battery. If the machine is on the internet or has a GPS receiver, it corrects the time by itself.

The machine’s clock drifts a few seconds a month

  1. If the time is off by a few seconds, the simplest way is to correct it with 1, 1, 1 (see “Change the time on the machine”).
  2. For a permanent correction every month there is the screen 1, 1, 9 «ΔΙΟΡΘ. ΡΟΛΟΓΙΟΥ» (clock correction), with the fields «ΕΜΠΡΟΣ/ΠΙΣΩ» (forward/back) and «ΔΕΥΤΕΡ.» (seconds) (up to 60 seconds a month).
  3. The choice between «ΕΜΠΡΟΣ» and «ΠΙΣΩ» is easy to mix up and, if it is set the wrong way round, it doubles the error. So make this setting together with the company on the phone.
  4. If you opened the screen by mistake, press NO. When you see «ΑΝΑΒΑΘΜΙΣΗ ΟΧΙ» (update: no), press OK without changing it.

If the machine gets the time from GPS or from the internet, this correction is usually not needed.

The hands of the tower clock show the wrong time

  1. First make sure that the time on the machine’s screen is correct.
  2. From the home screen, press 1, 1, 7. You will see «ΡΥΘΜΙΣΗ ΡΟΛΟΓΙΟΥ» (clock setting) with the fields «ΩΡΑ» (hour) and «ΛΕΠΤΑ» (minutes). The hands in the bell tower stop for a short time.
  3. Look at the time the hands of the tower clock are showing right now.
  4. In «ΩΡΑ», type the hour the hands are showing and press OK. Then type the minutes in «ΛΕΠΤΑ» and press OK.
  5. You will see the «ΑΝΑΒΑΘΜΙΣΗ ΟΧΙ» (update: no) box. With the right or left arrow, change it to «ΝΑΙ» (yes) and press OK.
  6. If you want to leave without changes, press NO.

With this setting the machine learns where the hands are and brings them to the correct time. It applies only if the machine drives the tower clock. For a secondary clock, the setting is made the same way from 1, 1, 8.

See what will ring today or on another day (schedule)

  1. On the home screen, below the date, the «ΣΥΜΒΑΝΤΑ» (events) line shows the next scheduled melodies.
  2. For the whole list of the day, press OK. You will see «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΕΣ» (melodies) with «ΩΡΑ» (time), «ΑΡ.» (number) and «ΤΙΤΛΟ» (title).
  3. Press the right arrow to also see the service programmes of the day, e.g. when the hour strike is switched on and off.
  4. For another date: from the home screen, press OK and then 0. In «ΡΥΘΜΙΣΗ ΗΜΕΡΟΜΗΝΙΑΣ» (date setting), type the date you want and press OK. You will see the melodies of that day.
  5. Press NO to go back to the home screen.

Marks in the list: «+» next to the time means the melody was added for that day only. A line through the text means it was cancelled for that day only. «X» next to the time means the matching button I–V has its schedule switched off. «*» next to the times means the whole automatic schedule is paused.

Bell ringing for one day only (e.g. funeral, memorial service, feast day)

  1. From the home screen, press 1, 2, 2. You will see «ΕΙΔΙΚΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ» (special programme) with the fields «ΗΜ ΜΗ ΕΤ» (day month year, showing today’s date), «ΑΝΑ ΩΡΑ» (time) and «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ» (melody).
  2. In «ΑΝΑ ΩΡΑ», type the hour and minutes (e.g. 17 00) and press OK.
  3. If the bell ringing is not for today, move to the date with the arrows, type the correct one and press OK.
  4. In «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ», type the number of the melody.
  5. Press OK to save. If you press NO, you leave without saving.
  6. To check, press OK on the home screen (or OK and 0 for another day). The new bell ringing has «+» next to the time.

It plays only on that day and then deletes itself. If another melody is already set for the same time, the new one plays, not the old one. You can also do the same another way: OK, 0, date, OK, then OK on a melody in the list, «ΕΙΣΑΓΩΓΗ» (insert) and OK. The same «ΕΙΔΙΚΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ» screen opens.

Cancel one bell ringing for one day only

  1. From the home screen, press OK and then 0.
  2. In «ΡΥΘΜΙΣΗ ΗΜΕΡΟΜΗΝΙΑΣ» (date setting), check or change the date and press OK.
  3. You will see the «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΕΣ» (melodies) list of that day. With the up/down arrows, choose the bell ringing you do not want and press OK.
  4. You will see «ΑΠΕΝΕΡΓΟΠΟΙΗΣΗ» (deactivate) and «ΕΙΣΑΓΩΓΗ» (insert). With «ΑΠΕΝΕΡΓΟΠΟΙΗΣΗ» highlighted, press OK.
  5. The line turns red and crossed out. It will not play, but only on that day and at that time.
  6. Press NO to go back to the home screen.

On the following days the schedule plays normally. If you change your mind, follow the same steps. On the crossed-out line you will see the option «ΕΝΕΡΓΟΠΟΙΗΣΗ» (activate) instead of «ΑΠΕΝΕΡΓΟΠΟΙΗΣΗ».

Pause the scheduled melodies for a while

  1. From the home screen, press 1, 2, 1. You will see «ΑΝΑΣΤΟΛΗ ΗΧΟΥ» (sound suspension) with a date and «ΑΝΑ ΩΡΑ» (time).
  2. Type the hour and minutes when you want the melodies to STOP and press OK. If needed, move to the date with the arrows, change it and press OK.
  3. You will see «ΕΝΕΡΓΟΠΟΙΗΣΗ ΗΧΟΥ» (sound activation). Type the time (and, if needed, the date) when you want them to START AGAIN and press OK.
  4. Press NO to go back to the home screen.

The hour strike and the service programmes continue normally. The pause deletes itself from the memory as soon as it ends.

⚠ Fill in BOTH, the stop and the restart. If a mistake is made, the machine may not ring automatically again, and the hourglass on the screen turns dark. Then turn the schedule back on by pressing, in this order: 1, 2, 3, then 2, 3, OK, 1, OK.

Switch the whole automatic schedule off / on (hourglass button)

  1. To the right of the screen, the first (very top) of the 5 buttons has an hourglass symbol.
  2. To switch the automatic schedule OFF: press and hold it for about 5 seconds. The hourglass on the screen turns dark.
  3. To check: press OK. «*» appears next to the times in the list. Press NO to go back.
  4. To switch it ON again: hold the hourglass button again for about 5 seconds. The hourglass on the screen turns gold.
  5. Another way to switch it on again: press 1, 2, 3, type 23, press OK, then 1 and OK.

It stays off until you switch it on again. The service programmes do not stop. The hour strike is switched on and off separately, from the clock button.

Switch the schedule of buttons I–V on / off

  1. In the bottom line of the screen, on the left, the small icons I–V show whether the melodies of each button play at their scheduled times. Gold means on, grey means off.
  2. To change it, press and hold the matching button (I to V) for about 5 seconds.
  3. If the icon turns grey, that melody will not play at its scheduled times, and in the list (OK) you will see «X» next to the time.
  4. If it turns gold, it plays normally at its times again.

Example: if melody 1 is scheduled at 16:00 and icon I is grey, it will not play at 16:00 until you switch it on again. A short press of the button simply plays the melody.

New permanent bell ringing in the schedule (every day / every Sunday)

  1. From the home screen, press 2 and then OK. When an access code is requested, type it in (requires a code — contact the company). You will see «ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΚΑΜΠΑΝΙΣΜΩΝ» (ringing programme).
  2. Press 3 for «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ» (standard). With «** ΝΕΟ» (new) highlighted, press OK.
  3. You will see «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ ΑΡ.» (standard no.) with the fields «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ» (melody), «ΕΒ» (weekday), «ΗΜ/ΜΗ/ΕΤ» (day/month/year) and «ΑΝΑ ΩΡΑ» (time). With «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ» highlighted, press OK, type the number of the melody and press OK.
  4. In «ΕΒ» (day of the week): for every day, leave «ΠΑΝΤΑ» (always) and press OK. For one day only, e.g. Sunday, find «ΚΥΡ» (Sun) with the left/right arrows and press OK.
  5. Leave the date («ΗΜ/ΜΗ/ΕΤ») empty, so that it applies all year round.
  6. In «ΑΝΑ ΩΡΑ», type the hour and minutes (e.g. 12 00) and press OK.
  7. Press NO to leave and save. The new line appears in the «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ» list, e.g. «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ:50 … ΠΑΝΤΑ 12:00».

There must be at least 1 minute between two melodies. If there is also a melody at the same time in «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ ΗΜΕΡΑ» (standard day), the one in «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ» plays. To play once a year, move with the arrow onto «ΗΜ/ΜΗ/ΕΤ» and type day and month, e.g. 01 07 for 1 July. For one day only, use «ΕΙΔΙΚΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ» (special programme) (1, 2, 2).

⚠ In the first field, leave the word «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ». With the arrows it changes to other kinds of programme. This programming changes the church’s whole yearly schedule; if you are not sure, ask the company to do it.

Change the melody (or time) of a permanent scheduled bell ringing

  1. On the home screen, press OK and write down the time and number of the bell ringing you want to change. Press NO.
  2. Press 2 and then OK. When an access code is requested, type it in (requires a code — contact the company). You will see «ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΚΑΜΠΑΝΙΣΜΩΝ» (ringing programme).
  3. Press 3 for «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ» (standard). You will see the list, e.g. «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ:50 … ΠΑΝΤΑ 12:00».
  4. With the up/down arrows, choose the line you want and press OK.
  5. You will see «ΕΠΕΞΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ» (edit) and «ΔΙΑΓΡΑΦΗ» (delete). With «ΕΠΕΞΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ» highlighted, press OK.
  6. Change the number in «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ» (melody) — or the time in «ΑΝΑ ΩΡΑ» (time) — and press OK.
  7. Press NO to leave and save. Check by pressing OK on the home screen.

In «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ ΗΜΕΡΑ» (standard day, option 1) there is one extra step. First you choose the day programme (e.g. «1 ΤΥΠΙΚΗ ΗΜΕΡΑ»), press OK and «ΕΠΕΞΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ», and then choose the line. This first menu also has «ΔΙΑΓΡΑΦΗ», which deletes the whole day programme. A change in a «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ ΗΜΕΡΑ» applies to all the days that use it. To change it for one day only, without touching the schedule: cancel the old one for that day (OK, 0, «ΑΠΕΝΕΡΓΟΠΟΙΗΣΗ» (deactivate)) and add the new one with «ΕΙΔΙΚΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ» (special programme) (1, 2, 2). To make one of the buttons I–V play a different melody, see the guide for that.

⚠ Take care not to press «ΔΙΑΓΡΑΦΗ». If you cannot find the bell ringing in «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ», it may be set in «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ ΗΜΕΡΑ», in a feast day or in «ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΑ» (daily); in that case call the company.

Permanently delete a bell ringing from the schedule

  1. Press 2 and then OK. When an access code is requested, type it in (requires a code — contact the company).
  2. Press 3 for «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ» (standard).
  3. With the up/down arrows, choose the line you want to delete and press OK.
  4. You will see «ΕΠΕΞΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ» (edit) and «ΔΙΑΓΡΑΦΗ» (delete). With the down arrow, choose «ΔΙΑΓΡΑΦΗ» and press OK.
  5. Press NO to leave and save.

⚠ Deleting is permanent. If you just do not want it to ring for one day or for a few days, use the one-day cancellation (OK + 0) or the pause (1, 2, 1) instead. If the bell ringing is set in «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ ΗΜΕΡΑ» (standard day), a feast day or «ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΑ» (daily), call the company.

Change the melody a button I–V plays (advanced)

  1. Buttons I–V play the melodies numbered 1–5. To make one play a different melody, e.g. III, the new melody must be put in number 3.
  2. Find the number of the melody you want (the «ΜΝΗΜΕΣ» (memories) card, or the pointing-hand button, 0, OK).
  3. From the home screen, press 3 for «ΗΧΟΣ ΚΑΜΠΑΝΑΣ» (bell sound) and then 5 for «ΔΙΑΓΡΑΦΗ» (delete). On the «ΕΠΙΛΟΓΗ ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑΣ» (melody selection) screen, type the number of the button (e.g. 3) and press OK.
  4. You will see the «ΑΚΥΡΟ» (void) box with «ΟΧΙ» (no). With the left or right arrow, change it to «ΝΑΙ» (yes) and press OK. The old melody in number 3 is deleted.
  5. In the «ΗΧΟΣ ΚΑΜΠΑΝΑΣ» menu, press 4 for «ΑΝΤΙΓΡΑΦΗ» (copy). Type the number of the melody you want and press OK.
  6. You will see «ΑΝΤΙΓΡΑΦΗ ΑΠΟ» (copy from) and «ΝΕΟΣ ΑΡΙΘΜΟΣ» (new number). The machine suggests the first free number. Type the number of the button there (e.g. 3) and press OK.
  7. Test: press NO until you reach the home screen, and then press the button (e.g. III). In «ΚΛΗΣΗ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ» (programme call) you should see the new title. Press NO if you do not want it to play.

A melody can only be copied to a free number. That is why the old melody of the button is deleted first.

⚠ Deleting cannot be undone. Only melodies that the user created or copied are deleted; the factory melodies cannot be deleted. If the melody with this number is also in the automatic schedule, the new one will now play at the same times. If you are not sure, call the company first.

Feast days and festivals (Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, the church’s patronal feast)

  1. For one specific day, e.g. this year’s patronal feast or the Resurrection service this year, the simplest way is «ΕΙΔΙΚΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ» (special programme): 1, 2, 2, then time, date, melody number and OK (see “Bell ringing for one day only”).
  2. To play every year on a fixed feast: press 2 and OK. When an access code is requested, type it in (requires a code — contact the company). Then press 5 for «ΕΟΡΤΗ» (feast).
  3. Press 1 for «ΙΕΡΑ ΠΑΝΗΓΥΡΙΣ» (holy feast). With «** ΝΕΟ» (new) highlighted, press OK.
  4. With the left/right arrows, find the feast (e.g. «ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΑ 25/12» (Christmas 25/12), «ΘΕΟΦΑΝΙΑ 06/01» (Epiphany 06/01)) and press OK.
  5. Leave «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ» (melody) selected, type the number of the melody and press OK.
  6. In «ΑΝΑ ΩΡΑ» (time), type the time and press OK. Press NO to leave and save.

Instead of «ΜΕΛΩΔΙΑ», you can choose «ΤΥΠΙΚΗ ΜΕΡΑ» (standard day) with the arrows, which is a ready-made programme for the whole day. This is set up by the company. The «ΕΟΡΤΗ» menu also has «ΕΟΡΤΗ ΑΝΑΦΟΡΑΣ» (reference feast, for something that plays some days before or after a feast) and «ΕΟΡΤΗ ΑΝΑΦΟΡΑΣ ΠΕΡΙΟΔΟΥ» (reference feast period). For these, it is better to have the company help you.

⚠ For Easter and the other movable feasts, do not rely on the machine’s list of feasts unless you have first confirmed it with the company. The safest way is to set the Resurrection service every year with «ΕΙΔΙΚΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ» (1, 2, 2). A new feast, e.g. of the patron saint, can only be added by the installer (requires a code — contact the company).

Funeral toll (funeral, Holy Week)

  1. Find the number of the funeral toll on the «ΜΝΗΜΕΣ» (memories) card. There are usually «ΠΕΝΘΙΜΟ ΚΗΔΕΙΑΣ (5 λεπτά)» (funeral toll, 5 minutes) and «ΠΕΝΘΙΜΟ Μ.ΕΒΔΟΜ (ΣΥΝΕΧ)» (Holy Week toll, continuous). Otherwise see the machine’s list: pointing-hand button, 0, OK.
  2. To ring it now: press the pointing-hand button (bottom right of the screen), type the number and press OK.
  3. To make it last longer, press OK while it is playing. Each press adds one repeat.
  4. To stop it, press NO twice.
  5. To have it ring by itself at a set time, e.g. tomorrow at the funeral: press 1, 2, 2, type the time, the date and the number of the funeral toll, and press OK.

There is no separate button for the funeral toll: it is a melody with its own number, which differs from church to church. «ΠΕΝΘΙΜΟ Μ.ΕΒΔΟΜ (ΣΥΝΕΧ)» is continuous; it stops when you press NO twice.

Hour strike (clock): on / off

  1. To the right of the screen, the second button from the top has the symbol of a clock with a small hammer.
  2. To switch the hour strike OFF: press and hold it for more than 5 seconds. The clock with the small hammer on the screen turns dark.
  3. To switch it ON again: hold it again for more than 5 seconds. The icon turns gold.
  4. Another way: press 1, 2, 3, type 21 (on) or 22 (off), press OK, then 1 and OK.

If the schedule has a time at which the clock switches on by itself, the striking will start again by itself at that time. The type of strike (hours only, hours and half-hours, quarters, etc.) and which bell strikes the hours are set by the installer; to change them, contact the company.

No hour strike at night

  1. For one night: hold the clock button (2nd from the top, to the right of the screen) for more than 5 seconds; the clock icon turns dark. In the morning, hold it again to turn it back on.
  2. For a permanent setting you need two daily «ΥΠΗΡΕΣΙΕΣ» (services): one that switches the clock on in the morning and one that switches it off in the evening. Press 2 and OK; when a code is requested, type it in (requires a code — contact the company).
  3. Press 6 for «ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΑ» (daily). On the «ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΙΣΜΟΣ ΕΚΔΗΛΩΣΗΣ» (event programming) screen, press 2 for «ΥΠΗΡΕΣΙΑ» (service). With «** ΝΕΟ» (new) highlighted, press OK (perhaps twice), until you see the fields «FRM» / «ΣΤΟ» (from / to).
  4. Type FRM 01 01 and «ΣΤΟ» 31 12 (all year), and in «ΑΝΑ ΩΡΑ» (time) e.g. 06 55. Leave «ΠΑΝΤΑ» (always), choose «ΕΝΕΡΓ. ΡΟΛΟΓ.» (clock on) with the right arrow and press OK.
  5. Press OK for a new programme and, in the same way, set «ΑΝΑ ΩΡΑ» to e.g. 22 05 with «ΑΠΕΝ. ΡΟΛΟΓ.» (clock off). Press OK.
  6. Press NO to leave and save.

This is the example from the manual: the clock strikes from about 07:00 to 22:00 every day. If there are speakers (electronic bells), there is also a night volume (services 25/26).

⚠ Usually the installer has already set such times. If you want different ones, the existing ones must be changed, not new ones added. If you are not familiar with this, ask the company to do it.

Run a service programme (e.g. lights, switching the clock on)

  1. From the home screen, press 1, 2 and then 3 for «ΕΚΤΕΛΕΣΗ ΥΠΗΡΕΣΙΑΣ» (run service).
  2. You will see the list of services. Find the one you want with the up/down arrows, or type its number directly in «ΕΚΤΕΛ. ΥΠΗΡ.ΑΡ.:» (run service no.).
  3. Press OK. You will see the number, the name and «ΕΠΙΒΕΒΑΙΩΣΗ;1=ΝΑΙ» (confirm? 1 = yes).
  4. Press 1 and then OK.
  5. An asterisk «*» next to a service in the list means that it is active. Press NO to go back.

Useful services: 21 switches on / 22 switches off the hour strike; 23 switches on / 24 switches off the scheduled melodies; 39 switches on / 40 switches off both together; 27/28 speaker on/off; 25/26 night volume on/off. Numbers 70–150 are for your church’s own services (lights, heating, doors), which the installer sets up.

⚠ On older machines, «ΕΚΤΕΛΕΣΗ ΥΠΗΡΕΣΙΑΣ» may be at a different number in the menu. Choose the line with this name.

Sound volume (speakers / electronic bells)

  1. From the home screen, press 1, 4. You will see «ΕΛΕΓΧΟΣ ΗΧΟΥ» (sound control).
  2. Press 2 for «ΕΛΕΓΧΟΣ ΕΝΤΑΣΗΣ-ΤΟΝΟΥ» (volume-tone control) and then 1 for «ΕΛΕΓΧΟΣ ΕΝΤΑΣΗΣ-ΤΟΝΟΥ». That is 1, 4, 2, 1 in total.
  3. You will see a list of values: «ΚΥΡΙΑ ΕΝΤΑΣΗ» (main volume), «ΟΘΟΝΗ» (screen), «ΝΥΧΤΕΡΙΝΗ ΕΝΤΑΣΗ» (night volume), «ΩΡΙΑΙΑ ΚΡΟΥΣΗ» (hour strike), «ΝΥΧΤ.ΩΡΙΑΙΑ ΚΡΟΥΣΗ» (night hour strike), «ΣΤΑΘΕΡΗ» (fixed), «ΚΙΝΗΣΗ» (swinging).
  4. With the up/down arrows, choose the one you want. Usually it is «ΚΥΡΙΑ ΕΝΤΑΣΗ».
  5. Type the new value with the number buttons and press OK.
  6. Press NO to leave and keep the settings. If you see «ΑΝΑΒΑΘΜΙΣΗ» (update), change it to «ΝΑΙ» (yes) and press OK.

«ΚΥΡΙΑ ΕΝΤΑΣΗ» is the overall volume. «ΟΘΟΝΗ» is the small speaker of the machine itself. «ΝΥΧΤΕΡΙΝΗ ΕΝΤΑΣΗ» is the volume when the night service (25/26) is on. «ΩΡΙΑΙΑ ΚΡΟΥΣΗ» is the volume of the hour strike. «ΣΤΑΘΕΡΗ» is the melodies and «ΚΙΝΗΣΗ» is the swinging bells. All of these concern only the sound from speakers (electronic bells), not the real bells.

Switch the external speaker on / off

  1. From the home screen, press 1, 4. You will see «ΕΛΕΓΧΟΣ ΗΧΟΥ» (sound control).
  2. The first line says «ΕΞΩΤΕΡΙΚΟ ΗΧΕΙΟ ON» (external speaker on) or «ΕΞΩΤΕΡΙΚΟ ΗΧΕΙΟ OFF» (external speaker off).
  3. Press 1 to change it from ON to OFF or the other way round.
  4. Press NO a few times to go back to the home screen.

You can do the same with services 27 (speaker on) and 28 (speaker off), from 1, 2, 3. This applies only if speakers have been installed.

Swing the bells (with motors) by hand

  1. This applies only if the church has swinging bells (with motors).
  2. Press the third button to the right of the screen (symbol of a bell with a wheel).
  3. You will see «ΕΚΤΕΛΕΣΗ ΚΙΝΗΤΗΣ» (run swinging) with «ΕΝΟΤ.ΑΡ.:» (unit no.) and «ΡΥΘΜΟΣ» (rhythm).
  4. Type the numbers of the bells you want to swing.
  5. With the up/down arrows, set the time.
  6. Press OK to start them.
  7. To stop them, press NO a few times.

⚠ The correct “momentum time” of each bell must have been set by the installer. Otherwise the electromagnetic striker can be seriously damaged while the bell is swinging.

Strike the bells by hand from buttons 1–9

  1. Press the fourth button to the right of the screen (symbol of a hand with a hammer).
  2. You will see «ΠΑΙΞΕ ΜΕ ΠΛΗΚΤΡΟΛΟΓΙΟ» (play with keypad) with the options «1 ΠΛΗΚΤΡΑ 1-9» (keys 1-9), «2 ΕΞΩΤΕΡΙΚΑ ΠΛΗΚΤΡΑ» (external keys), «3 ΣΦΥΡΙΑ» (strikers).
  3. Press 1 for «ΠΛΗΚΤΡΑ 1-9».
  4. Press the number buttons 1 to 9 on the machine and the bells ring.
  5. To leave, press NO a few times until you reach the home screen.

Option 2 is for an external keypad (optional). Option 3, «ΣΦΥΡΙΑ», lets you ring the electromagnetic strikers while bells with motors are also swinging (real bells only).

⚠ If you are also ringing swinging bells, the same care is needed regarding the momentum time that the installer sets.

Remote control (optional): how to play a melody

  1. Switch on the remote control: press and hold the button on its side for about 2 seconds. On older remote controls, press the ON/OFF button.
  2. Type the number of the melody, the same one you use on the machine.
  3. Press the green START button. The melody starts.
  4. To stop it, press the red STOP button.
  5. For a service programme (e.g. lights): press the orange S (the screen shows «S»), type the number of the service and press START.
  6. On the machine, the remote-control icon in the bottom line of the screen flashes when it receives a command.

The remote control is optional. It has a 5-inch touch screen, a receiver with an external antenna, and a charger. It switches itself off after 60 seconds without use. From the remote control you can also switch the automatic schedule on and off. For charging, see the guide “Charge the remote control”.

Charge the remote control

  1. The battery level is shown at the top right of the remote control’s screen: green means full, orange half, red low.
  2. Connect the charger we gave you (USB-C plug) to the remote control and plug it into the wall socket.
  3. The light on the remote control shows what is happening: red means it is charging, green that it is charged, flashing red that the battery is low.
  4. A full charge takes about 3 hours.

With a full battery it works for about 5 hours of continuous use.

Control from a phone / tablet / computer (cloud connection)

  1. This is an optional feature and is not included in the basic equipment of the GM-870I.
  2. The machine must be connected to the internet with a network cable (Ethernet).
  3. With the app on your phone or tablet you can play a melody, see the events of the day and switch off the automatic schedule.
  4. In the bottom line of the machine’s screen, the network icon and the cloud icon show whether the machine is connected.
  5. For installation and an account, contact the company.

The cloud connection (Tsitouras-Cloud) also lets the company help you remotely (programming, updates).

What the icons on the screen mean

  1. Top line, left, the hourglass: gold means the automatic scheduled bell ringings are on, dark means they are paused.
  2. Top line, middle, the clock with the small hammer: gold means it strikes the hours, dark means the hour strike is off.
  3. Top line, right, the bell tower with a clock: gold means the tower clock is working, dark means it is out of service.
  4. Bottom line, left, I to V: gold means the schedule of that button is on, grey means it is off.
  5. Bottom line: the padlock is the keypad lock, the speaker is the external speaker and the moon is night mode (volume).
  6. GPS / DCF: time received from a receiver. The antenna is the remote control (it flashes when it receives a command). The sun shows the automatic summer/winter time.
  7. USB / SD: a memory has been inserted. The two screens and the cloud: connection to the network / cloud.

Keypad lock and codes

  1. In the bottom line of the screen, the padlock icon shows whether the keypad is locked or unlocked.
  2. Locking and unlocking are done with a special number (requires a code — contact the company).
  3. The «ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΚΑΜΠΑΝΙΣΜΩΝ» (ringing programme) menu, button 2, and the «ΓΕΝΙΚΕΣ ΡΥΘΜΙΣΕΙΣ» (general settings) menu, button 5, ask for an access code (requires a code — contact the company).

The codes are there so that nobody changes the church’s schedule by mistake. The manual mentions a code only for menus 2 and 5. The everyday tasks (melody now, time/date, cancelling or adding for one day, pausing the schedule) are done with buttons I–V, the pointing hand, OK and menu 1.

After a power cut

  1. The schedule and the melodies are not lost: they stay in a memory that does not need power.
  2. The time is kept by an internal lithium battery, which lasts about 10 years.
  3. When the power comes back, check that the time and the date on the screen are correct. If not, correct them with 1, 1, 1 and 1, 1, 2.
  4. Check that the hourglass and the clock with the small hammer on the screen are gold (on).
  5. Press OK to check that the bell ringings of the day are in place. Press NO to go back.
  6. If the hands of the tower clock are wrong, set them with 1, 1, 7.

The tower clock (when the machine drives it) catches up with the time by itself after a power cut. If the power cut happened at the time of the summer/winter time change, the change is made within the next 22 hours. Some service programmes, e.g. for lights, may not switch back on after the power cut; this depends on the installer’s setting. If the time is wrong after every power cut, contact the company.

It did not ring when it should have

  1. Check the time and the date on the screen. If they are wrong, correct them (1, 1, 1 and 1, 1, 2).
  2. Look at the hourglass at the top left of the screen. If it is dark, the automatic schedule is paused. Hold the hourglass button (1st on the right) for 5 seconds, or press 1, 2, 3, then 23, OK, 1, OK.
  3. Press OK for the list of the day. If you see «*» next to the times, the whole schedule is paused. If you see «X», the button I–V of that melody is switched off. If the line is crossed out, the bell ringing was cancelled for today.
  4. If you see «X», hold the matching button I–V for about 5 seconds, so that its icon turns gold.
  5. If the bell ringing is not in the list at all, it is not scheduled for that day. Add it with 1, 2, 2, or ask the company for permanent programming.
  6. Try playing it by hand (pointing-hand button, number, OK). If nothing can be heard, contact the company.

If the sound comes from speakers, also check that it says «ΕΞΩΤΕΡΙΚΟ ΗΧΕΙΟ ON» (external speaker on) (1, 4). If the hours are not striking, see the guide on the hour strike. If you are speaking with the company on the phone, they may ask you to open 1, 3 «ΠΡΟΒΟΛΗ ΕΞΟΔΩΝ» (output view): there the green indicator shows which outputs (strikers, motors, clock) are working at that moment.

The screen is dark or went back to the start by itself

  1. Press NO. The screen light comes on for about 1 minute.
  2. This is normal: when no buttons are pressed, the screen light dims.
  3. If you stay in a menu without pressing anything, after a few minutes the machine goes back to the home screen by itself. Start again from the beginning.
  4. If the screen stays completely dark whatever button you press, contact the company.

There is a service (42) for a screen that stays lit all the time, but it is not recommended because it shortens the life of the screen. Service 43 brings back the automatic dimming.

Create or edit a melody (advanced)

  1. From the home screen, press 3 for «ΗΧΟΣ ΚΑΜΠΑΝΑΣ» (bell sound).
  2. For a new melody, press 1 for «ΣΥΛΛΟΓΗ» (compile). With the arrows, choose the type (e.g. «ΚΑΜΠΑΝΕΣ» (bells)) and press OK.
  3. Add commands with the arrows and OK (e.g. «ΔΙΑΡΚΕΙΑ ΚΡΟΥΣΗΣ» (strike duration), «ΕΠΑΝΑΛΑΜΒΑΝΟΜΕΝΗ» (repeating), «ΠΑΥΣΗ» (pause)), typing the number of the bell and the times.
  4. When you have finished, press NO. Press 1 for «ΔΟΚΙΜΗ» (test) to hear it, or 2 to correct it.
  5. Press 3 for «ΑΠΟΘΗΚΕΥΣΗ» (save), type a free number and press OK. Then type a title of up to 15 letters: the up/down arrows change the letter and the left/right arrows change the position. Press OK.
  6. To correct an existing melody: 3, then 2 for «ΕΠΑΛΗΘΕΥΣΗ» (check), type the number and press OK. Choose the line and then «ΕΠΕΞΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ» (edit), «ΕΙΣΑΓΩΓΗ» (insert) or «ΔΙΑΓΡΑΦΗ» (delete).

The commands «ΚΙΝΗΣΗ» (swinging) and «ΕΠΑΝΑΛΑΜΒΑΝΟΜΕΝΗ» start immediately. That is why they must be followed by a «ΠΑΥΣΗ» equal to or longer than their duration. There is also recording with the keypad (button 4).

⚠ On swinging bells, a wrong composition or a wrong momentum time can cause damage. The factory melodies cannot be deleted, but they can be altered; a backup is needed before any changes. If you are not familiar with this, ask the company for help.
